TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — From the first inning on, Sunday afternoon was a mess for the Alabama defense.

The No. 10 Crimson Tide had two of its six errors on the day in the first on the way to a 11-2 run-rule loss to No. 13 Florida as the Gators took the series in Tuscaloosa. Five of the 11 runs were unearned.

"That was just an ugly game by us," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "I just told them that it's like every single year– I don't care what sport– every team I've followed or liked, unfortunately they all have that ugly game, and tonight was ours."

It was the most errors for Alabama in game since 2002.

Jaala Torrence got the start in the circle for the Crimson Tide and induced ground balls from Florida’s first two dynamic batters in Kendra Falby and Skylar Wallace. But Bailey Dowling bobbled both balls at third base, allowing the Gators to reach. Florida scored two unearned runs to go up 2-0, and that wouldn’t be the end of it.

Florida tacked on seven runs in the fifth inning thanks to three more errors from the Alabama defense, sending 11 batters to the plate.

Alabama’s best offensive chance came in the third inning when it had the bases loaded with no outs for the heart of the order after infield singles from Kristen White and Lauren Johnson and a walk from Jenna Johnson. Alabama scored its two runs on a fielder’s choice and groundout. No one could get a hit with a runner in scoring position.

"They need to put it in a gap, and they know that," Murphy said. "So, 3-4-5, and the only ball that left the infield was the last out. That's when we have an opportunity to do really big damage. We have to have something other than a fielder's choice...That's when we have to do damage."

Right after Alabama got back into the game with the two runs in the third to cut the deficit to one run, reliever Jocelyn Briski gave up a solo leadoff home run to Florida's Ava Brown that made it 4-2 before the Gators added seven more runs in the fifth.

Alabama (19-3, 0-2 SEC) has the opportunity to salvage one game from the series in Monday's finale at 6 p.m. against the Gators (21-3, 2-0 SEC) and Murphy wants to see a big response from his team with the week it has ahead with games against Florida State and Georgia coming up.

"The bigger thing to me is how we play tomorrow– win, lose or draw," Murphy said. "We have to have a better performance tomorrow... We can't let it linger at all."

Starting Lineups

Pre-game

  • Lauren Esman started as the DH yesterday. She's not in the starting lineup today and has a wrap on her left shoulder. From what I understand, a player wearing this type of wrap does not mean that they're unavailable to play.
  • Alabama is wearing the all-crimson uniforms today. The Gators are donning the white jerseys with blue pants.
  • 30 minutes before first pitch, the Brickyard is already really packed with people.
  • With Beaver starting the first game, it is assumed senior Jaala Torrence will get the start for Alabama in the circle in Game 2. She is the only Alabama pitcher that has been warming up in the bullpen so far under the watchful eye of pitching coach Lance McMahon.
