BREAKING: East Coast cornerback commits to Michigan State over Oklahoma, Florida

The Spartans continue to stockpile defensive back talent in their 2024 recruiting class...

Another day, another 2024 commitment for Michigan State football.

Head coach Mel Tucker and his coaching staff have been hard at work this summer to add future talent to the Spartan program, and they just reeled in another one. On Saturday, three-star Providence (R.I.) La Salle Academy cornerback Justin Denson gave his verbal pledge to MSU.

Denson chose Michigan State among a 'Top Five' which also included Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama and Texas A&M. The Sooners in particular were pushing hard to land the 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back as his decision date approached, but MSU's tag-team of cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado and safeties coach Harlon Barnett won the day.

While considered a three-star recruit, Denson's offer sheet suggests he's underrated as a prospect. In addition to his 'Top Five', the native of Rhode Island has also received offers from Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Colorado, South Carolina, Arkansas and others. Denson is ranked No. 613 overall, the No. 57 cornerback and No. 1 player from Rhode Island, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

Michigan State's defensive backs class is shaping up nicely. In addition to Denson, the Spartans have landed pledges from three-star cornerbacks Jaylen Thompson, Syair Torrence and Camren Campbell, as well as three-star safety Reggie Powers.

Since the start of June, the Spartans have landed eight verbal commitments including four-star running back Anthony Carrie, three-star quarterback Henry Hasselbeck and three-star offensive linemen Mercer and Charlton Luniewski. Michigan State had previously earned pledges from three-star offensive linemen Andrew Dennis and Logan Barnett, bringing its 2024 class up to 11 commitments.

With the addition of Denson, Michigan State's 2024 recruiting class has moved up to No. 48 in the country and No. 13 in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports' team rankings. The Spartans' average player rating of 87.47 is good enough for No. 35 in the nation and No. 8 in the conference.
