Mizzou Minute 1/29/24: An Eventful Weekend of Missouri Sports

Football and gymnastics picked up huge victories, while both basketball teams as well as the wrestling squad suffered setbacks.

On a weekend that saw several Mizzou squads in action, the results were a mixed bag.

The first team to make noise didn’t actually have a scheduled game; rather, they made a major coaching hire, as Mizzou football found their new defensive coordinator. After Blake Baker left Mizzou to take LSU’s defensive coordinator position, it was reported on Friday that the Tigers from the midwest hired former South Alabama DC Corey Batoon to the same position. In two seasons at USA, Batoon’s defense ranked highly in several defensive statistics, and Batoon will look to spearhead similar success in Columbia.

Later that night, Mizzou gymnastics upset third-ranked LSU in front of a ruckus Hearnes Center crowd. The midwest Tigers emerged victorious by just 0.1 in large part due to excellent performances on the fault and floor routine. The most notable performance came from Kennedy Griffin, who registered a 9.9750 on the floor routine.

On Saturday, Mizzou men’s basketball fell to South Carolina 72-64 despite 21 points and seven assists from Sean East II. The loss dropped the Tigers to 0-7 in conference play, something they haven’t done since the 2016-17 season, when they finished 2-16 in the SEC.

The following day didn’t produce much better results. Despite Mizzou wrestling having an upper hand on Cornell on paper, the Big Red pulled off the upset, handing the Tigers their first defeat of the season.

Not too long after, Mizzou women’s basketball dropped their third consecutive games on Sunday, this time to Arkansas. The Razorbacks were led by Saylor Poffenbarger, who drained eight of her 11 three-point attempts.
