Nearly a full calendar year after suffering a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to the Spiders in Richmond, Virginia women's lacrosse (6-1) avenged that loss in dominant fashion with a resounding 20-5 victory over Richmond (4-2) on Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium.

It was an historic night for Morgan Schwab, who recorded a program-record eight assists to lead the Cavaliers. Half of those assists came in the first quarter, as Schwab assisted on goals by Jenna Dinardo, Mackenzie Hoeg, Madison Alaimo, and Katia Carnevale to help UVA jump out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the opening night.

Carnevale scored again early in the second quarter and Kate Galica scored two in a row after that to extend UVA's lead to 8-2 five minutes into the second, but it was the defense that stood out for the Cavaliers. Virginia held Richmond without a goal for the entire second and third quarters and the Spiders went from the 6:43 mark of the first quarter to the 6:30 mark of the fourth quarter without scoring, more than 45 minutes of game time without a goal.

By the time Richmond finally found the back of the net again, Virginia had used a 16-0 run to build an insurmountable 19-2 lead. Richmond managed only 15 shots in the game, with seven of those going on cage. The Cavaliers outshot the Spiders 34-15 and caused 11 turnovers.

All of Morgan Schwab's eight points came on assists, while Katia Carnevale led UVA in scoring with four goals on six shots. Kate Galica and Jenna Dinardo each had a hat trick and Mackenzie Hoeg, Kate Miller, Kiki Shaw, and Devon Gogerty had two goals each.

Now 6-1 on the season, Virginia returns to ACC play for a tough road challenge at No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday at 12pm in South Bend.
