• MONDAY'S SHOW: SI.com's Peter King breaks down the NFL ... Rick Telander on the demise of the Cubs

Fairfield Giants assistant coach Paul Pabst

Dan Patrick Show producer Paul Pabst takes a unique look at the best and worst from the weekend every Monday ...

THE BEST

1. Yale beating Holy Cross in double-OT -- I know this is not USC vs. Ohio State, but college football is great to see in person, any time. I live 15 minutes away from New Haven. Yale games are perfect: Quality football, getting in and out is a breeze, wooden benches, great tailgate. The tough thing at Yale is that there is no TV on the scoreboard for replays. The good thing, this forces you to WATCH THE GAME. If you miss a TD, that's it. It won't be on TV later.

2. Liverpool's comeback against Manchester City -- If you don't like soccer, please move on to No. 3. Down 2-0, you usually don't see a comeback in football (soccer). English Premier League games are soccer's version of college football. It's a energetic atmosphere. The fans are lightly threatening, but mostly in a good mood.

3. The Fairfield Giants winning their final home game of the year -- I help coach a team of 7th- and 8th-grade kids. The best part, at the end of Sunday's game we had a big lead. We let some kids play other positions. Some of the kids have played offensive line for years and we let them carry the ball. Some played DB for years and we let them play the line. All the kids got into it and cheered when their friends got reps at other positions than their own.

THE WORST

1. Watching Texans QB Sage Rosenfels implode against the Colts -- I'd make fun of him, but it's just too painful.

2. The Cubs no-showing for the playoffs -- I'm a Cubs fan and I'm prepared for a letdown like in 2003, like in 1984 ... but to not even have a pulse, that's weak.

3. Waiting 25 minutes for my salami, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich at the A&S Italian Deli in Fairfield, Conn. -- If you ever in the area, man, it's good food ... stop in. Wait, did I just make the line even longer?

Dan says that you have to consider the Redskins when you're looking at the top team so far this season. Yes, the Giants beat them in Week 1. But look at what Washington has done since. The 'Skins are coming off road wins at Dallas and Philly. Could the Giants do that?

You also have to mention the Titans, but Dan isn't convinced Kerry Collins can keep this up.

Another question: who is the worst team in the NFL? The Chiefs won a game, but looked very bad against the Panthers yesterday. Four teams are winless -- Detroit, St. Louis, Houston and Cincy. The Texans and Bengals will win some games. You can't say the same about the Rams and Lions.

Bob Costas barely avoided catastrophe on NBC's FNIA.

Football Night in America show producer Sam Flood says that there's an internal investigation at NBC about Bob Costas' chair problem on Sunday night. Apparently, Dan was seen lingering around the studio before the show started.

Flood can't tell Dan that he is next in line if Costas goes down. Apparently Chris Meyers is in the mix.

If you didn't see it, Costas turned to face Collinsworth and nearly fell. Then he fell apart for a moment, mentioning colleague "Jerome Buttis."

You have to get the feeling this story isn't over. We'll keep a close eye on "freak" accidents that might befall Costas over the next few weeks.

Chi McBride and Dan Patrick hanging out

The great Chi McBride joined Dan to talk about his Cubbies. He's trying to talk tough, but he's clearly heartbroken.

McBride gave us interesting insight into Chicago fans' minds. A lot of cynicism. McBride says if the Cubs do win, look out for a mushroom cloud, because it means the end is here. He also said he has no interest in rooting for the White Sox.

But McBride is happy O.J. was found guilty. McBride has an idea for a new book: "If I held a guy hostage and did all sorts of stuff to get some memorabilia back, here's how I did it."

And McBride shared a story about hearing Prince play at his house. I would love to visit Prince's house. Maybe play some hoops.

Kevin Costner may be considering a Bull Durham sequel.

There are reports Kevin Costner is talking to Ron Shelton about a sequel to Bull Durham. Sound like a good idea? Dan points out most sports movie sequels are pretty bad.

Consider this list ...

1. Bad News Bears Go To Japan (I saw it. Worst movie of all time. Tony Curtis was in it. Kelly falls in love in the worst love montage of all time.)
2. Slapshot II (Paulie reports it's awful)
3. Major League II (Omar Epps took over Wesley Snipes' role as Willie Mays Hayes)
4. Rocky II (actually pretty good)
5. Caddyshack II (sadly, a disaster)

Seton jokingly suggested Rudy II.

Lineman has pinkie amputated

The Mesa State College senior offensive lineman fractured his right pinkie so severely in practice on Tuesday, doctors told him he needed immediate surgery. His season and career would be finished.

Instead, Wikre told them to amputate the finger. He's now missing a good portion of his pinkie.

"I'm just short one," Wikre said with a chuckle. "But this game means that much to me. This team means that much to me."

Wikre will miss the Mavericks' game Saturday at Colorado School of Mines, but will be back the following week - albeit with his finger covered in a cast.

"Football is something that's been in my blood," said Wikre, who's from Berthoud, Colo. "It's something I have a passion for. The game quits everybody eventually - you want to hang on to it as long as you can."

Wikre was going for a block in practice when he caught his finger in a teammate's jersey. At first, he didn't give the ailing pinkie a second thought, thinking the sensation he was feeling inside his glove was a piece of tape that had simply slipped off.

But when he removed his glove, the bone was jutting out, and he was immediately sent to the hospital.

Doctors informed Wikre he would need surgery to insert a pin and that he'd likely be out for up to six months as the finger healed. He couldn't bear the thought of his career ending so abruptly, so he decided to forsake the finger.

"This was the best way to get me back out there," Wikre said. "There are worse things in the world - a pinkie is not that bad in my mind."

Peter King has a lot of love for the Giants. He says that winning without Plaxico Burress showed what kind of depth they have. The Giants might be the dominant team in the NFL right now, although it's still a bit early to say that.

Here are some more tidbits from King.

1. At one point, King said the guys were talking at NBC about how Sage Rosenfels had won the Texans job. Then after his meltdown, they were talking about whether he would still be on the team by the end of this week.

2. The Dolphins are a classic case of Bill Parcells instantly turning around a team. King says it's not just the wild-cat formation. They're winning with defense and are playing with a lot of spirit.

3. Drew Brees "is going to go Cutler" on the Vikings tonight. Mainly because the Saints won't be able to run on Minnesota.

Today's poll question is interesting. Would you want your team got close, like the Cubs, and then fell apart at the end? Or would you rather not even be in it, like the Reds, Royals or Pirates of late?

Dan also asked Paulie, a lifelong Cubs fan, which year he'd take, this one or 2003? Paulie said '03, because at least the Cubs put up a fight in the postseason.

I would argue this year's Cubs provided a lot of excitement and years from now fans will look back fondly at this season. No one in Kansas City, Cincy or Pittsburgh is looking back at this season with fondness.

Let's face it, to be a sports fan, you have to take risks. It's better to be in the game and lose in a painful way then to not even step up to the plate like some teams.

What's up Dan Nation? This is the real McLovin' back in the house. Just in time for Dan to talk about my Phillies, a crazy weekend in the NFL and the latest on O.J., college football and more.

SI.com's Peter King joins the show to break down Week 5 in the NFL. Did you see the end of the Texans-Colts' game. That had to be the worst QB meltdown in years.

More NFL topics: The Giants improve to 4-0. Are they the team to beat? What about the 5-0 Titans? And what about the teams that still haven't won a game. Are we going to see an 0-16 team this season?

Also, the Chicago Sun-Times' Rick Telander stops by to talk about the Cubs. Telander is seriously disappointed in the Cubs and wonders why fans should ever root for them again.
