Overzealous high school grounds crew mows artificial turf

A grounds crew got a little bit too overzealous recently and gave a high school artificial turf field a trim with a lawnmower.

Wouldn't this make some sort of awful sound or smell? Shouldn't people whose job is to take care of grass be particularly good at spotting plastic grass? Had they just realized that they never mowed the field before?

Then again, maybe the crew did know what it was doing and simply wanted some attention. If so, mission accomplished.
