The story of the pitcher's decision to hit as many of the Cincinnati Reds as possible comes from a 1984 interview with Jet magazine about his struggle with drug addiction.
Ellis had a particularly thorny history with the Reds, who were the Pirates' primary rival throughout the '70's. In 1972, a security guard at Riverfront Stadium maced Ellis for failing to show ID while trying to enter the stadium, and Cincinnati star Joe Morgan accused the pitcher of throwing a spit ball.
