Kolten Wong and Randal Grichuk hit back-to-back homers for the Cardinals off Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks in the bottom of the fifth, closing the Cubs’ lead to 6–3.
Hendricks had stayed out of trouble since allowing a home run to the first batter of the game, Matt Carpenter, and his team spotted him five runs in the second and another in the third.
But Wong and Grichuk, who was pinch-hitting, answered quickly and changed the tone of the game with their solo shots.
Hendricks was removed from the game for lefthander Travis Wood after Grichuk’s homer.
