Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo has been placed on outright waivers, reports Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball.

The move comes just two days after the 28-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Castillo was placed on waivers Saturday and is not expected to be claimed before he clears on Monday.

Since being signed by the Red Sox in 2014, the former Cuban-league star is hitting .262 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs over 99 games.

He has appeared in just nine games this season, and is hitting .245 in 147 at-bats at Pawtucket.

Castillo is owed $11 million per season over the next three years, with a $14 million option for 2020.
