The Royals have placed closer Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain, the team announced on Tuesday.
Davis, 29, has dominated once again in the ninth inning for Kansas City, posting a 1.23 ERA over 29 1/3 innings this season, with 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
Joakim Soria and Luke Hochevar are likely to see larger roles in the bullpen.
This is hardly the first significant injury the Royals have dealt with this season. Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain have both missed time, and Mike Moustakas is out for the season with a torn ACL.
In a corresponding move, the team selected the contract of righthander Brooks Pounders to take Davis’s spot.
