Rays try to intentionally walk Gary Sanchez, who swings and hits 400-foot sac fly
The Rays tried to intentionally walk Gary Sanchez, but he nearly hit a home run.
Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez had himself a fine afternoon, hitting a home run for a second straight game to help New York to a 5–1 over the Rays. More impressive than the home run, though, was what he did in the eighth.
With runners on second and third, the Rays decided to intentionally walk the formidable rookie and pitch to struggling shortstop Didi Gregorius. A smart move, considering what the catcher had done innings before. But when Enny Romero left a pitch close enough to the plate, Sanchez decided to swing.
He drove the pitch-out all the way to the centerfield wall, plating Brett Gardner.
Sanchez finished 1 for 2 on the afternoon.
