Marlins will retire No. 16 in honor of Jose Fernandez

No Marlins player will wear No. 16 again.

The Miami Marlins will retire the No. 16 in honor of the late Jose Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident early Sunday, owner Jeffrey Loria told reporters on Monday.

It will be the first number retired by the team aside from Jackie Robinson’s No. 42, which has been retired by each team in the major leagues. The club had previously retired No. 5 in honor of Carl Barger, the first president of the Florida Marlins, but un-retired it in 2012.

Fernandez, one of the best young players in baseball, was one of three people killed in the crash, according to the Coast Guard. The boat crashed into a jetty and was found capsized by search and rescue teams around 3 a.m. off the coast of Miami Beach, according to CBS Miami. 

The identities of the other two men killed in the crash were released on Monday.

Miami canceled its scheduled game on Sunday, and will play the Mets on Monday night at home in a game that Fernandez was scheduled to start. Each member of the Marlins will wear No. 16 during the game.
