Padres Rumors: Writer Proposes Blockbuster Trade to Get Cy Young Winner from NL Contender

This would be a hell of a get for San Diego.

It has been reported over and over that the Padres likely won’t be retaining starting pitcher Blake Snell this offseason. Despite Snell being likely headed toward winning his second Cy Young Award, San Diego seems to be okay with letting him move on.

They have a ton of money tied up in other players moving forward, so they likely don’t want to add more to their salary books. The Padres should be looking to cut salary, rather than adding more to their totals.

If Snell does end up leaving the team, they will be left with a major hole in their rotation. So, the Padres will be looking around the league at different options to fill the spot left by Snell.

One way to replace him could be to look at the trade block, and they may find some good options. One of them is starter Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers, and he could be made available after the Brewers were dispatched in the wild-card round.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report put together some trade packages for Burnes if the Brewers were to move him, and the Padres were one of the teams included.

"Trade Proposal: San Diego Padres get RHP Corbin Burnes; Milwaukee Brewers get LHP Robby Snelling, OF Samuel Zavala and 1B Nathan Martorella. It's doubtful that the Brewers would be able to get at Ethan Salas' (MLB's No. 6 prospect) or Jackson Merrill (No. 13), but they'd hardly be settling with this deal. Snelling (No. 31) and Zavala (No. 93) are both top-100 types and Martorella could be the long-term first base solution the Brewers badly need."

Per Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report

If the Padres could replace Snell with Burnes, it would be an incredible get for the team. Burnes has lights-out stuff on the mound and could slip right in as the ace of the team.

Burnes had a slightly down year in terms of ERA, but he still put up great numbers everywhere else. He finished the season with an ERA of 3.39 and a WHIP of 1.07.

These teams also have a history of making deals together in the past, so that could help things move along. But, if the Padres can make this happen, they absolutely should look to do so.
