Activating Phillies Star Slugger Makes Zero Sense

The Philadelphia Phillies could get back one of their star sluggers in the World Series if they advance. But activating him would be a mistake based on his injury recovery and what manager Rob Thomson would have to do with the lineup.

The standing room only crowd at Citizens Bank Park will be shaking if public address announcer Dan Baker belts out Rhys Hoskins’ name in a potential World Series game.

It would be a true love story.

But it’s also a small narrative which may not come to fruition.

Since tearing his ACL in a non-contact injury during spring training on March 23, Hoskins has been working diligently to return. It’s a testament to his desire and determination to try and come back as early as possible to help the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies should be solely focused on the most productive way to win a World Series for the first time since 2008.

Utilizing Hoskins would be a two-man move every time. Unless he hit the ball out of the park or recorded an out, a pinch runner would be required every time. If Hoskins crushes a ball into the gap, the odds of taking an extra base are slim.

Is it even wise to ponder Hoskins on the World Series roster?

Since his contract will expire following the postseason run, he may never don a Philadelphia uniform again.

That is truly unfortunate.

But to have to make a two-man move each time is way too risky.

The Phillies would be smart to let Hoskins lead from the dugout. Hoskins hasn’t seen this level of Major League pitching in a long time.

It just doesn’t make sense to activate him.

Even if the passionate fans are angry.
