Giants Pursuing Yankees' Superstar Free Agent Target Making Signing More Difficult
One of the top pitchers in baseball still is looking for a job.
Superstar starter Blake Snell won his second career Cy Young Award in 2023 as a member of the San Diego Padres and yet he still is available in free agency.
The New York Yankees have been linked to Snell on numerous occasions and the chatter has picked up even more since it was announced that fellow ace Gerrit Cole would be out for one or two months due to an elbow injury.
Snell would be the perfect addition to the Yankees' rotation, but cost is a serious factor. New York's payroll already is sky-high and landing Snell would add on a massive tax bill.
There still have been rumors about a possible signing, but it's unclear if a deal will get done. New York seemingly has plenty of competition for Snell's services, as well. The San Francisco Giants reportedly are showing interest in Snell, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"Giants are among teams showing interest in reigning (National League) Cy Young winner Blake Snell," Heyman said. "Uncertain where SF stands but manager Bob Melvin, who had him in SD, said this today. 'I want Blake to go somewhere he’s happy. He’s a terrific kid and a good pitcher.'"
New York needs to address the rotation after losing Cole but Snell might just be too expensive of an option at this point. The Yankees have said they are going all in on the 2024 campaign, but things aren't going their way at this point.
