New York finished the season 9–19 under interim Kurt Rambis, who took over after the firing of Derek Fisher in February. Rambis is reportedly the leading candidate to take the job.

Carmelo Anthony, who would play under his fifth different coach in seven years if the Knicks were to move on from Rambis, has recently said he would like to have some say in the hiring. He also reportedly told the team in a meeting to “take advantage of my window.”

The Knicks finished 32–50 and missed the playoffs for a third straight season.
