Jazz G Jason Preston Earns Player of Week Honors with SLC Stars

Can Utah Jazz guard Jason Preston crack the 2024-25 roster?

It appears some Utah Jazz prospects have emerged playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G-League. Jazz guard Jason Preston won Player of the Week while leading the Stars to a 3-0 record.

Preston signed a two-way contract with Utah on January 9. He’s put up some impressive numbers during his time with the Stars. Over a 22-game span, Preston is averaging 17.2 points while dishing out 10 assists per game. Also, he's leading the G-League this year in triple-doubles with eight.

Preston did have some NBA experience before arriving in Salt Lake City. In 2022-23, he participated in 14 games with the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 2.9 points per game.

So, with Preston’s recent success, is there a shot to make the 2024-25 roster? The current path to a roster spot looks murky but could clear up this summer.

Talent Horton-Tucker’s contract expires at the end of the season, and won’t be back. There are also multiple rumors that this could be Jordan Clarkson’s last season as a Jazzman. The deciding factor could hinge on veteran point guard Kris Dunn's future in Salt Lake City.

Dunn will be up for a new deal this summer, and it's still unknown whether Utah will keep him around. He certainly has earned a new contract, but is he a fit with the Jazz? Dunn would be an inexpensive option to back up starting point guard Keynonte George, but would the Jazz rather roll the dice with a younger player with a higher ceiling?

This all remains to be seen. However, with Utah’s postseason chances being put to bed, the Jazz should be able to give Preston some rotational minutes before seasons end over players who won't be in the fold next season.
