BREAKING: Warriors’ Donte DiVincenzo Signs With Knicks
Madison Square Garden is set to host at least 41 Villanova University homecomings next season.
Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the New York Knicks are set to sign former Golden State Warriors shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo on a four-year deal worth $50 million.
The sixth-year man's Manhattan arrival reunites him with fellow former Villanova Wildcats Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, the latter of whom returned to New York on a $12.9 player option earlier this week.
DiVincenzo shot a career-best 39.7 percent from three-point range last season and dished out 3.5 assists a game, also a personal high. He made 24 starts over the final 25 games, during which he averaged 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds. Golden State went 14-10 in that span when he was in the starting five and 21-15 in DiVincenzo's 36 total starts last year.
His efforts helped the defending champion Warriors wrap up the sixth seed and avoid the Western Conference's Play-In Tournament despite losing several of their established talents to extended injuries. DiVincenzo also owns a championship ring from his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, who brought him in at the 17th overall pick of the 2018 draft.
Like Brunson, DiVincenzo was part of both Villanova national titles during the Jay Wright era, winning in 2016 and 2018. Commonly referred to as "The Big Ragu" and "The Michael Jordan of Delaware" during his college days, DiVincenzo went out in style, scoring a Final Four-record 31 points off the bench in the latter championship victory over Michigan. DiVincenzo also appeared in three Big East Men's Basketball Tournament finals at Madison Square Garden, winning two.
In New York, DiVincenzo's evolving outside game could help a Knicks group that fell short of the Eastern Conference Finals for the 23rd consecutive season thanks in part to struggles from three-point range: they were the only one of the NBA's 16 playoff teams to shoot less than 30 percent from the field. DiVincenzo has also earned positive reviews for his defense since his NBA entry.
Adding DiVincenzo is the first major addition of the Knicks' 2023 offseason affairs. While they also re-upped with Hart, they also brought back Miles McBride on a $1.8 million team option. Hart previously hinted that he would try to recruit DiVincenzo to New York during an interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report.
