NBA Trade Rumors: Warriors' Chris Paul to Spurs?

The Golden State Warriors may trade Chris Paul. Could the San Antonio Spurs be his next destination?

The San Antonio Spurs are about 48 hours away from the NBA Trade Deadline, and if they want to upgrade at the point guard position, now is the time to do so.

Among the potential point guards on the trade block is future Hall-of-Famer Chris Paul, who has struggled to make much of an impact in his first season playing with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

Feb 16, 2013; Houston, TX, USA; Western Conference head coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs talks with guard Chris Paul (3) of the Los Angeles Clippers during practice for the 2013 NBA All-Star game at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

While Paul had been seeking a championship with the Warriors, their current trajectory has them avoiding the postseason altogether, which means that Golden State's -- and CP3's -- goals could be changing.

If Paul wants to continue his career, perhaps joining a young team like the Spurs is the way to go. Not only could he get paid, but he could also be given legitimate playing time and an opportunity to mentor No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama.

Bleacher Report suggests that Paul could be a last-minute trade target for the Spurs.

"Could San Antonio sell 38-year-old Chris Paul, currently out with a left hand injury, on stewarding its upstart? Perhaps by guaranteeing his salary for next year? And could the Spurs also convince the Golden State Warriors to part with him?," Bleacher Report writes. "Offering Doug McDermott and Devonte' Graham saves the Dubs a boatload in luxury-tax payments. Does light draft compensation on top get them to nibble? How about if they also grease the wheels of shoehorning Graham into the Washington Wizards' $12.4 million traded player exception, saving Golden State oodles of money? Or are the Dubs focused on using his salary for something more than a tax dump?"

While Paul is out with an injury, it could bode well to simply have the presence of a player of his caliber. Paul has been known to make teams better when he arrives, and while that same sentiment hasn't hit Golden State, he could have a better chance to do that with the cellar-dweller Spurs as he transitions into the next phase of his basketball life.
