Why Spurs Should Trade For Hawks' Dejounte Murray

The San Antonio Spurs have three days to decide if they want to trade for Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray.

Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray might be the biggest name who could be traded ahead of Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline.

There are a number of suitors for Murray's services, including the Los Angeles Lakers, but the San Antonio Spurs have also shown interest in bringing the former All-Star back to where he began his career.

CBS Sports believes a trade for Murray makes sense for the Spurs.

"A Murray reunion makes some basketball sense here," CBS Sports writes. "The Spurs know what to expect (and possibly how to get the best defense out of him), and they have an advantage over the field in that they can send the Hawks some of their own draft picks back, which matters quite a bit for a team that might need to tank in the next few years."

Murray was traded by the Spurs to the Hawks in June 2022 for Danilo Gallinari and multiple first-round picks, but the deal hasn't paid dividends for Atlanta. The team failed to make it out of the first round of the playoffs last season. That's why Murray has been shopped during this deadline run, and the Spurs have reason to acquire him.

San Antonio still has several question marks at the point guard position, and some of those concerns are answered with a Murray trade. He would forge a partnership with Victor Wembanyama that could lead the Spurs back to relevancy.

The NBA Trade Deadline is set for Thursday at 2 p.m. CT.
