The Arizona Cardinals placed defensive back Tyrann Mathieu on the physically unable to perform list, the team announced  Wednesday.

Mathieu is entering his second season with the team and is recovering from a torn ACL suffered last December. During his rookie season, he had 65 tackles, two interceptions and one sack.

The Cardinals also placed nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu on the PUP list as he also recovers from an ACL injury.

Head coach Bruce Arians said the team will wait for the doctors to clear both players before bringing them back.

“I’m not going to hurry them. We have plenty of time. If they aren’t ready for the first day of training camp — which I doubt anyway, because I’ve never thought that -- I had Oct. 1, or after the [bye week] as the target date for me personally. If they do something better than that, God bless ’em.”

The Cardinals finished last season 10-6 and in third place in the NFC West behind the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.
