49ers sign Alfonso Smith for depth at running back following injuries

The San Francisco 49ers signed running back Alfonso Smith after LaMichael James and Kendall Hunter were injured this month. Smith, 27, spent the previous four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed running back Alfonso Smith following recent injuries to LaMichael James and Kendall Hunter, Smith announced on Monday night.

Smith, 27, spent the previous four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. In 43 career games, he has 153 yards on 48 carries with two touchdowns.

Hunter tore his ACL on Friday and is expected to miss the entire 2014 season. James reportedly dislocated his elbow and is expected to miss at least one month.

San Francisco opens its preseason schedule on Aug. 7 in a rematch of Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens. The Niners kickoff the 2014 season on Sept. 7 against the Dallas Cowboys.
