Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is medically cleared to play in Sunday night's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. It will be his first action in a game since undergoing surgery on his left ankle over the offseason.

Newton, who threw for 3,379 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, says he still has short bouts of pain in his ankle.

"Cam is on track to do the things we need him to do now,” Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said, via ESPN.com. “We're now getting to the point where the work load is going to increase and things are going to change and we're going to do things differently now.”

Rivera also said running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are expected to play against Kansas City. Neither they nor Newton played in the Panthers first preseason game, a 20-18 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Friday.
