Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won't play in the team's preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, Roethlisberger told Pittsburgh sportswriter Dejan Kovacevic.

Roethlisberger has appeared in all three of the Steelers' preseason games thus far, receiving increased playing time each week. He's combined to go 24-of-37 for 331 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the preseason.

In the veteran's absence, backups Landry Jones, a rookie, and Bruce Gradkowski will likely receive the bulk of the snaps.

Roethlisberger, 32, is entering his 11th season in the NFL, all with the Steelers. He threw for 4,261 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season.

Though Pittsburgh traditionally renegotiates contracts for quarterbacks when they have two years left on their deals, as Roethlisberger currently does, the team said last week that a new contract won't be discussed with Roethlisberger until after the 2014 season.
