Miami Dolphins fire head coach Joe Philbin
The Miami Dolphins have fired coach Joe Philbin, the team announced Monday.
Philbin will be replaced by tight ends coach Dan Campbell on an interim basis, according to multiplereports. Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is also expected to be fired, reports Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole.
“This was a tough decision for me to make knowing how tirelessly Joe worked in his four years here to make this a winning team,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. “I am extremely disappointed with how we have started season, but I feel confident that we can improve quickly with the talent we have.”
The Dolphins lost 27–14 to the New York Jets on Sunday, their third straight loss and second in a row to a division rival. Miami has trailed by double digits in each of its four games this season.
Miami entered this season with high expectations after signing quarterback Ryan Tannehill to a contract extension and adding Ndamukong Suh in free agency.
Philbin was 23–25 in his first three seasons with the Dolphins, and 1–3 this year before the firing. Miami has a bye in Week 5, and plays the Tennessee Titans in Week 6.
