The Bills have signed linebacker Brandon Spikes, his agent announced Sunday.

The deal is for one year, NFL.com reports.

The 28-year-old Spikes joins the team with the status of rookie linebacker Reggie Ragland, the team’s second-round pick, up in the air due to injury. Buffalo also signed linebacker David Hawthorne for added depth.

Spikes has not played in the NFL since 2014, when he was a member of the Bills. He signed with the Patriots ahead of the 2015 season, but was released in June 2016 after a hit-and-run incident that led to probation and motor vehicle charges for Spikes. The NFL suspended him for four games as a result, and he spent 2015 away from football.

Ragland injured his knee on Friday, and the team has yet to update his status.

Spikes made 10 starts with the Bills in 2014, recording 54 tackles and serving as a defensive captain.
