Giants Re-sign CB Darnay Holmes; Lose OT Matt Peart

New York retains a key special teams player/defensive depth while losing a reserve offensive tackle.

The New York Giants have re-signed cornerback Darnay Holmes to a one-year deal, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Holmes, the team's fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall) in the 2020 draft out of UCLA, was drafted to be the team's slot cornerback. However, he gradually saw his role reduced, last year seeing the fewest number of snaps on defense (123) in his four-year career outside of 2021, when his season ended early due to a rib injury.

The 5-10, 195-pound Holmes, who took a pay cut to remain with the Giants last year, found new life on special teams as a punt gunner, teaming up with fellow cornerback Nick McCloud. Holmes finished second on the Giants in special teams tackles (seven, all solo) and had a forced fumble.

Holmes has a career 87.3 NFL coverage rating.

Offensive tackle Matt Peart, the Giants' third-round pick in the 2020 draft, is signing a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Peart played his college ball at Connecticut and was the 99th overall pick in his draft class. Highly touted for his physical skills and size, it was hoped that he might become the bookend tackle to Andrew Thomas, the first-round pick in the 2020 draft who has since settled in as one of the best left tackles currently in the game.

Unfortunately, Peart didn't make the same kind of progress. He lost out on the starting right tackle job to Nate Solder, who had moved to right tackle after years of playing on the left side.

Peart saw his biggest workload that season, starting in five games while playing 421 offensive snaps. However, he suffered a torn ACL and was placed on injured reserve on December 27 after playing in 15 games.

Peart started 2022 on the reserve/PUP list. He was activated on November 12 and gave the Giants snaps as a reserve offensive lineman and jumbo tight end.

Last year, he landed on injured reserve on October 25 with a shoulder injury. He was activated on December 24, 2023.
