Should Jared Goff Give Lions Hometown Discount?

Jared Goff is due for a hefty raise after a successful 2023 season.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is due for a hefty raise this offseason. In 2023, he became the only No. 1 overall pick since Peyton Manning to win two or more playoff games with multiple teams.

Cincinnati Bengals franchise passer Joe Burrow currently earns an average of $55 million per season, with approximately $219 million in guaranteed monies.

While Goff may not end up being the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, there is an expectation his representatives will want to take advantage of a quarterback market that has exploded in the past few years.

According to CBS Sports, "Goff's camp may feel that putting him in the same place in the NFL salary hierarchy as his first extension is warranted. Herbert is the league's second-highest-paid player. He signed a five-year, $262.5 million extension averaging $52.5 million per year in late July at the start of training camp. The extension's maximum value is $267.5 million because of $2.5 million of base salary escalators each in 2028 and 2029."

Detroit was in a unique position the past two seasons, as the team was rebuilt with young players on their rookie deals.

With the team garnering success, several of its top players are going to expect elevated salaries soon, including Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell and Alim McNeill.

With Aidan Hutchinson eventually going to become among the highest-paid pass-rushers in a couple of years, too, the team must allocate its resources wisely, in order to sustain success.

Would Goff be willing to take less money annually for more monies guaranteed? It would be a little surprising, but advantageous, if the average annual salary was less than $50 million.

Would a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $180 million appease agents? Keep in mind that the league's players are always seeking to push the market forward.

Some teams, after rewarding their quarterbacks, have fallen off. The salary cap does make it more challenging for good teams to stay together and compete at a high level.

The Lions have been able to maneuver the cap wisely in Brad Holmes' tenure.

Should the 29-year-old not break the bank and offer the team a chance to sign him for a reasonable contract?
