Report: San Jose Sharks talking to Randy Carlyle about coaching job

The San Jose Sharks may be circling their next coach: Randy Carlyle, the former bench boss of the Maple Leafs.

Just days after parting ways with Todd McLellan, the Sharks appear to be circling their next coach.

Their target? Former Maple Leafs bench boss Randy Carlyle.

According to a report by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, San Jose sought and received permission from Toronto to speak with Carlyle about their job vacancy. If he’s hired, the Leafs are not expected to seek compensation under the league’s new policy.

Carlyle has more than 350 regular season victories to his credit and he won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007. He’s regarded as someone who places an emphasis on offensive hockey, but a passive approach to forechecking, and struggles in Toronto’s defensive end led to his firing by the Leafs back in January.

Current Red Wings assistant coach Tony Granato also has been reported as a potential candidate for the position.
