Boston is four-and-a-half games out of the last wild-card spot in the American League but with a lot of traffic in front of it. The Yankees, meanwhile, still own a 10-game lead in the AL East but have fallen behind Houston for the AL's best record and are just 7-13 since the All-Star break.
New York is 6-4 against the Red Sox this season and took two of three in the most recent meeting at Yankee Stadium in mid-July.
Veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi opens the series for Boston. In 17 starts, he is 5-3 with a 4.23 ERA and 1.228 WHIP in 93-and-two-thirds innings. He got a no-decision in a loss at Kansas City on Saturday, allowing four runs and striking out seven in six innings.
The Yankees will hand the ball to right-hander Domingo Germán. He returned last month after missing the first three months of the season with a right shoulder impingement and is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA and 1.528 WHIP in four starts and 17-and-two-thirds innings.
He took the hard-luck loss at St. Louis on Saturday, allowing just one run in five innings in a 1-0 game.
