Diego Falcinelli struck first for Modena just 11 minutes into the game followed by a Nicola Mosti goal at the 30-minute mark. Just before entering the locker room, Domenico Berardi scored for Sassuolo on a penalty kick to cut Modena's lead in half. Mosti brought the lead back to two with another goal at the 52' mark. Kaan Ayhan found the back of the net for Sassuolo just before regulation play ended, but it was too little, too late and Sassuolo walked away empty-handed.
