Ernst, a freshman at LSU, twice shot a six-under-par 66 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, to win the NCAA D-I individual title by three strokes. The All-America's school-record seven-under 281 overall score was highlighted by her first career hole in one on the 2nd hole of the final round followed by a 60-foot birdie putt on the 3rd hole.
Mac McGuire
SOUTHLAKE, TEXAS > Track and Field, Soccer, Football
Mac, a senior at Southlake Carroll High, ran a 47.80-second anchor leg in the 4 × 400 to lead his relay team to the Class 5A title. In soccer he scored a team-high 37 goals in helping the Dragons win the state title and a national No. 1 ranking. He also was named all-state as a kicker for the football team. Mac will play soccer at Boston University next year.
Joyce Boone
BROOKLYN > Arm Wrestling
Boone, a 44-year-old home health aide, defeated Angela Annunziata of the Bronx to win the women's title at the 28th Bronxboro Arm Wrestling Championships, avenging her 1997 loss in the Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions, in which Annunziata broke Boone's arm. In April, Boone won the Queen of Arms title at the Big Apple Grapple.
