NOT: BIG GUNS

The Giants, Braves, Red Sox and Yankees were a collective 0 and 12 through Sunday. It's only April, but the last time Boston and New York were each winless through three, in 1966, they finished ninth and 10th in the AL.

HOT: LITTLE ONES

Meanwhile, the Mets, Orioles and Mariners—each picked by SI to finish last in their divisions—started a combined 9--1. After his O's won their second, manager Buck Showalter offered some perspective: "It's two out of 162, but it's a good way to start."

NOT: SAY IT AIN'T SO, SERGIO

After tying for 12th place at the Masters, 32-year-old Spaniard Sergio García—who has seven top four major finishes without a victory—sadly summed up his career: "I've come to the conclusion that I need to play for second or third."

HOT: DEVIL OF A FINISH

One year after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996, New Jersey enters the postseason as the East's No. 6 seed, having scored 22 goals in six straight wins. Says G Martin Brodeur, "Now, we'll roll the dice, coming in hot."

NOT: GALAXY: FAR, FAR AWAY

Last year's MLS champs seem lost in space. L.A. is 1-3-0, which puts them in last place in the West. To boot: The cost of captain Landon Donovan's and injured costar David Beckham's (below) zero combined goals so far is close to $9 million.
