HOT: JOHNSON CONTROLS
Demetrious Johnson defended his UFC flyweight crown for the first time last Saturday night in Chicago, defeating John Dodson in a unanimous five-round decision. Johnson, 26, said afterward, "I was stunned, but I am in great shape and my head cleared very quick."
NOT: GOPHER FOUR
No. 23 Minnesota (15--5) dropped four straight, including an agonizing 45--44 loss at the buzzer to Wisconsin last Saturday. Andre Hollins had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Gophers but turned the ball over with 39.1 seconds left when he was called for charging.
HOT: WIN-D CITY
The 6--0 Blackhawks got off to the best start in team history, outscoring opponents 22--13 and killing penalties at a 95.6% rate (second best in the NHL). Goalie Corey Crawford (1.78 GAA), meanwhile, stopped 29 of 30 Red Wings shots on Sunday night in a 2--1 Chicago win.
NOT: PANTHER PROBLEMS
Florida (1--4), which was outscored 18--3 in four consecutive losses last week, was off to its worst start in four years. Said coach Kevin Dineen last Saturday, after an ugly 7--1 loss to the Flyers at home, "We don't have the chemistry to play as a team.... It's stupid."
HOT: FIVE GUYS
A pair of Big Five teams—Villanova and La Salle—scored a quartet of major upsets last week. 'Nova (13--7) knocked off No. 3 Louisville and No. 5 Syracuse, while the Explorers (14--5) blitzed No. 9 Butler and—behind Ramon Galloway's 31 points—No. 19 VCU.
