The changes at Merion, Oakmont and the Old Course, they're all rooted in Tiger and his brethren. It's ridiculous there's so much focus on that. If you play in a beer softball league, you play with a metal bat. You watch baseball on TV, the pros use wood. Nobody cares. Part of the greatness of baseball is you're handed the ball to play with.
And they can still play in Wrigley Field and Fenway Park.
You could write a book on how technology has made our lives easier but not always better. Take cooking a steak in the backyard. It probably tasted better with charcoal, but now we all have gas grills. They're faster, easier and more convenient. But better? Not to me.
Better technology and better balls aren't a bad thing. Amateurs still hit horrible shots. They need more technology. I don't think rolling back the ball 10% for pros would hurt us. It doesn't make sense to renovate all these courses for one week of tournament play. Look, the problem is, I'm still getting longer off the tee and I'm not getting any younger.
Are we bitching because some of us are old-codger dinosaurs or is this the game's natural evolution?
