Boasting a thinner face than last season's RocketBallz irons, these clubs also have a lower center of gravity and a slot cut into the sole of the three- through seven-irons. Covered by polyurethane to keep out dirt and debris, the slot lets the face flex more at impact, enlarging the sweet spot and increasing ball speed over a larger area, the company says.
Like last season's Penta TP5, the Lethal is a five-layer ball, but TaylorMade added 6% more dimple coverage to the urethane outer layer and says it has improved the aerodynamics so the ball performs better in the wind.
ROCKETBALLZ STAGE 2 FAIRWAY METALS
The slot in the sole has been made wider to add more flex in the face at impact and deliver more distance. Because of this model's face and high-strength steel, TaylorMade says it is up to 10 yards longer than last year's. At the same time, the weight plug has been moved forward, promoting higher-launching, lower-spinning shots.
With movable one-and 10-gram weight plugs and a face that can be opened or closed up to 4°, the R1 has 180 yards of left-and-right adjustability, according to the company. The loft can be adjusted from 8° to 12°. Graphics have been added to the crown, but the leading edge remains matte white to contrast with the black face for easy alignment.
