Steve Kerr is arguably the hottest name on the NBA head coaching market at the moment, and in addition to being openly courted by Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks, he has reportedly been giving the first right of refusal on the Golden State Warriors opening. However, the waiting game has begun to set in for Kerr, and there is a report circulating that suggests that the 48-year-old will make a decision between the two opportunities by Monday.
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News brings a bit of clarity:
A source close to the TNT broadcaster indicated that Kerr would not be making an announcement on Thursday. From all indications, the Knicks remain the front-runners. In fact, Kerr told a close associate on Wednesday that he was leaning toward the Knicks.
However, the longer the process drags on, it suggests that Kerr is having second thoughts about the Knicks and may decide to remain on the West Coast and coach the Warriors. Kerr has a daughter who attends California-Berkeley, which is a few miles from where the Warriors play in Oakland. It has been two weeks since Kerr met with Phil Jackson, his former coach and close friend, in New York and yet Kerr has not committed to the Knicks.
Jackson has remained patient throughout the process and seems to be willing to give Kerr time to meet with his family and make a decision. From all indications, Kerr will decide no later than Monday.
ROUNDTABLE: Best NBA head coach available on the market?
From the beginning, the Knicks have been hot on the trail for Kerr and appears to be the only "serious" candidate at this point in the process. On the other hand, Golden State has been linked to college coaches Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie, as well as high-profile NBA figures including Stan Van Gundy and Mike D'Antoni.
Kerr's decision will likely be the "first domino" in what should be an interesting coaching carousel this offseason.
