The Match: Champions for Charity Raises $20 Million for COVID-19 Relief

The Match raised $20,000 for COVID-19 relief efforts.

Two of the world’s best golfers teamed up with two of the NFL’s legendary quarterbacks for a charitable golf outing this past weekend. The Match: Champions for Charity featured Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in an event that hoped to raise $10 million for COVID-19 relief aid. They ended up doubling the expected donation and raised an eye-popping $20 million.

Woods and Manning won the event which took place at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. Despite golfing in the pouring rain all four athletes made some incredible shots, entertained sport-deprived fans for a few hours and most importantly raised a lot of money to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Bill Enright: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning took to the golf course this past weekend to help raise over $20 million for COVID-19 charitable relief. Let's bring on Frank Taddeo, our gambling and fantasy insider here at Sports Illustrated to break down the gambling odds of who won and also find out how they doubled the expected charitable donations. Frank, take it away.

Frank Taddeo: Yeah, Bill. Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson came up short as Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning were able to lead from start to finish. Not only were they able to double expectations, they had a target range, Bill, in donations for Coronavirus victims, that was only for $10 million. But as the popularity of the telecast grew, online donations helped exceed expectations and they were able to raise more than double the original targeted amount. And on top of it, for all bettors out there, Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning, they were -175 favorites. In some shops here in Vegas, they went off at almost -200 and they were able to reward them as they led from start to finish, they dominated play.

Sports books around the country, they reported betting handles on the event that ranged from an average NFL regular season game to a higher profile regular season NBA game. So it was right around in there, wasn't anything spectacular in terms of betting handles. There was some interest, but bettors were easily rewarded as Manning and Woods were clearly the better team because Tom Brady really struggled. Mickelson did his best to try to carry them, but he wasn't really able to to do it on the golf course. Tom Brady really needs to stick to the gridiron.
