Would Argos Coach Ryan Dinwiddie Consider NFL in Future?

In a recent interview, Toronto Argonauts coach Ryan Dinwiddie discussed the possibility of moving back down south if an NFL opportunity came up.

Years before leading the Toronto Argonauts to Grey Cup titles, coach Ryan Dinwiddie played quarterback for the Boise State Broncos, setting the then-NCAA record for passing efficiency (168.9) during the 2001-03 seasons.

Now a CFL-champion coach, Dinwiddie spoke on Idaho Sports Talk with Prater and The Ballgame, and he discussed whether he would consider a coaching position in the NFL if it came up.

“Any NFL opportunity that’s the right fit, I think you look at that,” Dinwiddie explained. “How long it’s gonna last and what’s it gonna do as far as your future and giving you a chance to move on and get another job? That’s always a big deal. Is it advantageous for your family and those different things?”

Toronto head coach Ryan Dinwiddie is entering his fourth season with the Argonauts.

Last year when speaking to the media, Dinwiddie mentioned turning down a previous offer to be the quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018, citing that the timing was not correct for him. Dinwiddie was the quarterbacks coach for the Calgary Stampeders at the time.

Dinwiddie’s only NFL experience came while playing for the Chicago Bears from 2004-05 before signing with the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe. He also played six years in the CFL for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

As a coach, Dinwiddie has spent the entirety of his 11-year career in the CFL, working with the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders before joining the Argonauts in 2019.

Some considered Dinwiddie a potential candidate to take over at Boise State before interim head coach Spencer Danielson was promoted this weekend. If it was Dinwiddie's choice, he would prefer the NFL over college.

“I’d prefer to be an NFL guy,” Dinwiddie assured. “The NCAA, I’m always a West Coast guy as far as recruiting and being able to handle that.”

Dinwiddie will be entering his fourth year with the Argos and has gone 36-14 in the regular season. After winning the Grey Cup title in 2022. Toronto went 16-2 this past season before losing in the East Final to Montreal.

Until the NFL comes calling, it’s safe to assume Dinwiddie has a long coaching career ahead in the CFL.
