The BC Lions are bringing in some NFL talent to the secondary to build depth during the offseason. Former Denver Broncos defensive back Duke Dawson signed with the Lions on Tuesday.

Dawson was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft and won a Super Bowl with the team, despite not taking the field that year due to injury.

He then moved on to the Denver Broncos where he spent three seasons. In 26 games between 2019 and 2020, Dawson made 27 tackles and two pass deflections. An ACL injury late in the 2020 season kept him off the field until November of 2021, when the Broncos moved him to the practice squad.

Dawson began the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers before being cut towards the end of training camp. He finished out the year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he remained until training camp last year when he was once again released.

His college years were spent with the Florida Gators through 2017. His senior year, he earned a spot on the First-Team All-SEC team, making 34 tackles, four interceptions, nine pass deflections and two tackles for loss.

This is the second signing by the Lions of a defensive back after also bringing in Ciante Evans last week. Six total players have been signed by BC since the start of free agency.
