The 110th Grey Cup brought the CFL season to a dramatic close with the Montreal Alouettes defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24. That signaled the beginning of the offseason for the CFL with plenty of storylines to come.

Fans will be focused on the big offseason moves in free agency and trades. Another storyline is who will take over as the coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. There are changes to some aspects of the CFL fans and teams that need to know about going into the offseason though that will impact the league.

CFL Changes to Watch

Three storylines to follow during the CFL offseason:

Salary Cap Increase

The first change is the salary cap increase for the 2024 season. This was agreed upon during the collective bargaining agreement conversations last season between the players and the league. The salary cap is set to increase up to $5.585 million for the 2024 season.

2024 will also be the first year that players will receive revenue-sharing benefits. Players will be able to receive 25 percent of the revenue starting in 2024. The revenue received from the Grey Cup is also included in the revenue-sharing.

CFL Draft

The CFL Draft will have some slight changes as well for them. Whoever are the two teams that had national players play the most snaps in the 2023 season will receive additional second-round picks in the draft. This is to help give Canadian players more opportunities to play in the CFL compared to American players.

Balanced Schedule

One other change to mention is CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie announcing the balancing of the schedule for 2024. As reported earlier on this site, the league will have ten divisional games and eight non-divisional games during the regular season. The original schedule was more focused on divisional games to cut costs for the league after COVID-19.

The changes have the league trending in the right direction with revenue increase for players and the CFL.
