Former Calgary Stampeders, Denver Broncos Standout Harald Hasselbach Dies at 56

Former Calgary Stampeders and Denver Broncos defensive lineman Harald Hasselbach died after a battle with cancer.

Both the CFL and the NFL learned the news that former defensive lineman Harald Hasselbach died at the age of 56.

The Calgary Stampeders posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday after the Hasselbach family made the announcement. Hasselbach played for Calgary for four seasons. The family said that he had been battling cancer prior to his passing.

“Harald was a great Canadian and a championship-calibre player for the Stampeders at a significant time in the franchise’s history,” Stampeders president John Hufnagel said. “We extend our condolences to his family and friends.”

Hufnagel also coached Hasselbach.

Hasselbach was a fifth-round pick of the Stampeders back in 1989. He played for the team from 1990-93. His stats include 72 defensive tackles, seven special teams tackles, 14 sacks, one interception and seven fumble recoveries in 50 games played.

He won the Grey Cup with Calgary in 1992. His best season came in 1993 when he was named West Division and CFL All-Star after recording a career-high seven sacks, one interception and four fumble recoveries.

After his time with the CFL, he signed with the Denver Broncos in the NFL and played there seven seasons. He finished his NFL career with 119 tackles, 17.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 112 games played.

The Broncos also mourned the loss the Hasselbach on X.

Hasselbach won two Super Bowls with Denver becoming one of 10 players to ever win a Super Bowl and a Grey Cup in their careers.

He is survived by his wife, four children and four grandchildren.
