C.J. Avery’s stay in the CFL was a short one, as the defending Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes decided to move on from him on Tuesday. The Als also shared the signing of Macon Clark on Wednesday.

Avery started every game last year for the Vegas Vipers of the XFL, making 62 tackles in 10 games. He spent the 2022 NFL training camp with the Chicago Bears before being released.

Avery was one of the top defenders at Louisville as a four-year starter, finishing his college career with 349 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, three interceptions, 19 pass deflections, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 59 games with the Cardinals.

Macon signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2023, starting the season on the practice squad before being released in October. He appeared in 59 games with the Tulane Green Wave, producing 204 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, nine interceptions, 18 pass deflections, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Montreal opens the season on the road in a Grey Cup rematch with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 6.
