Hamilton Tiger-Cats Looking for New Head Coach, Restructure Football Operations
Change can come fast and quickly when it is unexpected. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are experiencing that firsthand, as the team is making some big changes to their football operations.
The Tiger-Cats announced Tuesday that head coach Orlondo Steinauer is moving into the president of football operations role. Ed Hervey has been named the general manager. As for a new head coach, expect an announcement next week.
Steinauer released a statement regarding the move being made.
“Hamilton is a special place for me and my family and I’m extremely proud of the sustainable culture and foundation that we have established,” he said. “In my five years as Head Coach, we’ve had success and accomplished a great deal. Now is the time for me to concentrate on my responsibilities as President of Football Operations and help the incredible people who work here every day as we strive for championships.”
Steinauer has held the coach title since 2019 and took over as general manager in 2022. In four seasons, he has compiled a 39-29 overall record and four straight playoff appearances. Steinauer led the team to the Grey Cup in 2019 and 2021, losing both games.
Other accomplishments during his time as coach include Steinauer winning the CFL’s Coach of the Year in 2019. That same season was a record-breaking year for Hamilton, as the Ti-Cats won a franchise-record 15 games. They also went 9-0 at home for the first time in franchise history.
Hervey has been with the Tiger-Cats since December of 2021, serving as assistant general manager and senior advisor to the president of football operations. In his statement, Hervey expressed his excitement as he enters his third GM role after having the same role with Edmonton (2013-16) and BC (2018-19).
“I am excited and humbled for this opportunity to be the General Manager of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. I would like to thank Scott Mitchell, Orlondo Steinauer and the Hamilton Sports Group for their support throughout this process.” Hervey said. “This is an incredible organization with a high-quality football operations department full of talented, hardworking people. I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to work with each of them.”
Hamilton went 8-10 last season before losing in the East semifinal to the Montreal Alouettes.
