New Hamilton Tiger-Cats Head Coach Didn't Need to be Head Coach Again
The idea of being leading a team in the CFL again wasn’t the motivation for Scott Milanovich to join the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before this past season.
Not that it didn’t come up in conversation with former coach Orlondo Steinauer, who recently moved into the role of president of football operations as part of front-office restructuring. Steinauer hired Milanovich as a senior offensive assistant, and he took over play-calling duties during the season.
Milanovich was named the 27th coach in franchise history earlier this week.
Milanovich, 50, previously coached the archrival Toronto Argonauts (2012-16) and Edmonton (2020). He led the Argos to a Grey Cup title in 2012 and never coached a game in Edmonton as the season was wiped out due to COVID-19.
The former NFL assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts said he didn’t need to be a head coach again.
“I had scratched that itch before on two occasions,” Milanovich said. “I love being a head coach, but I also love being a coordinator. I also love just being a quarterbacks coach. There’s different ways to find love in the game and there’s different challenges, but I always knew if the opportunity presented itself and (Steinauer) and I talked about this even before he hired me last year, that it was something that I was going to look into if it was the right situation.
“And this is the right situation with good people, with people I’m looking forward to seeing every day.”
The Ti-Cats went into the offseason with 36 pending free agents and uncertainty regarding the status of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell.
Hamilton was 8-10 last season and lost in the East semifinal to the Montreal Alouettes.
