Montreal Alouettes Quarterback Receives Contract Extension

After winning the Grey Cup in November, the Montreal Alouettes rewarded quarterback Cody Fajardo with a contract extension.

The Montreal Alouettes captured their first Grey Cup since 2010 after defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 last month. Cody Fajardo was the Grey Cup MVP, throwing for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

That performance and the title had to help in landing a new deal with the Alouettes.

The Als announced Wednesday a contract extension with Fajardo through the 2025 season. Fajardo was previously entering the second year of a two-year agreement signed last offseason.

Fajardo previously told the Montreal Gazette that he wanted the Als to be the last stop in his career.

“We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder,” Fajardo said. “We want to be that dynasty that starts to grow. If you look at our roster, we have a lot of first- and second-year players. I’m extremely excited to be able to say I’m coming back, here with a lot of guys that have put their heart and soul into this.”

In his first season with Montreal, Fajardo threw for 3,847 yards and 14 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. That was good for finishing fifth in the league in passing yards. He added three rushing touchdowns.

During the playoffs, Fajardo threw for 677 yards and six touchdowns in three games. He helped Montreal pull off wins over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Toronto Argonauts, and Winnipeg.

This has been in the works since the offseason began with dialogue being had between Fajardo's representatives and Montreal general manager Danny Maciocia.

With one of the more important moves being made, the Alouettes now will shift their focus on free agency with 22 pending free agents this offseason.
