Montreal Alouettes, Darnell Sankey Agree to Contract Extension
Montreal is making sure one of its best defensive players isn't going anywhere.
The reigning Grey Cup champions announced Friday morning that Sankey and the Alouettes had agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2025 season.
During the 2023 regular season, Sankey recorded 31 tackles, one sack, one interception, and two forced fumbles in six games. He continued that success in the postseason, racking up 22 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, and a fumble.
This was Sankey’s third season in the CFL after spending 2021 with the Calgary Stampeders and 2022 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has a career total of 248 defensive tackles, five sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions in 38 games played, along with a CFL West All-Star selection in 2021.
Before joining Montreal this season, Sankey went south to play in the XFL for the Arlington Renegades. He recorded 47 tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss in eight regular-season games. The Renegades went on to win the championship game, and Sankey had four tackles in the victory.
Sankey entered the offseason as the fifth-ranked free agent, according to CFL.ca.
Montreal has spent the week bringing back key players to the Grey Cup title team, re-signing quarterback Cody Fajardo and defensive lineman Shawn Lemon this week to contract extensions. The team looks to be doing whatever they can to keep the team together for the 2024 season to repeat as champions.
