Montreal Receiver Wins Grey Cup's Suderman Trophy
Montreal’s Tyson Philpot won the Dick Suderman Trophy, given to the top Canadian-born player in the Grey Cup, as the Alouettes defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 on Sunday at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.
Philpot was on the receiving end of the game-winning score as the Alouettes won their first Grey Cup since 2010.
Grey Cup MVP and Alouettes quarterback Cody Fajardo led the drive and hit the wide receiver with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds to push Montreal into the lead for good.
He finished the game with six catches for 63 yards and the touchdown reception.
Philpot is in just his second year of CFL action. Born in Delta, British Columbia, Philpot spurned the UBC and joined their Canada West rival Calgary. With the Dinos, Philpot and his brother, Jalen, became U Sports stars.
In his three years with the Dinos, Philpot had 96 receptions for 1,953 yards and eight touchdowns. He helped Calgary win the 2019 Vanier Cup and was named first-team All-Canadian in 2021. He was also named the U Sports Rookie of the Year in 2018.
Montreal made him a first-round pick in 2022 and he made an immediate impact, as he was given the Frank M. Gibson Trophy as the East Division’s top rookie.
This season, Philpot caught 47 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns, all of which bettered his numbers as a rookie.
The CFL began presenting the award in 1971 and named it for Suderman, who was the first winner of the award as a defensive end for Calgary.
Suderman passed away the following season due to a brain hemorrhage he suffered after a regular-season game. The CFL named the trophy in his honor.
