Ottawa Redblacks, QB Dru Brown Agree on Contract

After pulling off a trade a week ago, the Ottawa Redblacks and quarterback Dru Brown agreed to a two-year contract on Wednesday.

Dru Brown went into the offseason as one of the top young quarterbacks with the potential of running an offense. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers traded Brown to the Ottawa Redblacks for a draft pick last week, leading to negotiations on a new contract.

Brown and the Redblacks finalized a two-year contract through the 2025 season.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this great organization and to play in front of RNation in Ottawa,” Brown said in a statement Wednesday. “I’m excited to meet the guys and get to work.”

Brown, who finished his college career at Oklahoma State, has been with the Bombers for the last three seasons as their backup quarterback. He started two games last season, throwing for 983 yards and nine touchdowns to zero interceptions. He set a CFL record for most touchdowns in a season thrown without an interception.

His career stats include 1,484 passing yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He has also ran for 113 yards and five scores in 38 career games.

“Dru is a productive quarterback who has demonstrated when previously given the opportunity to be an excellent decision maker who can lead a team on the field,” Ottawa Redblacks general manager Shawn Burke said. “We believe he will fit in well in our quarterbacks room and we’re excited that he wants to take the next step in his career as a REDBLACK.”

Speaking of the quarterback room, it has become crowded with seven on the roster. The front-runner to take the job is Jeremiah Masoli, who has been dealing with injuries the last two seasons. Dustin Crum was the main starter in 2023 with Nick Arbuckle as his backup.

Brown has all the mechanics needed in a quarterback, whether it’s his accuracy to his ability to make plays with his feet. He hasn’t had enough of a chance to showcase his skills fully, but should Masoli continue to deal with lingering injuries, Brown could be the next man up.
