The Saskatchewan Roughriders have brought in some help for their secondary over the past two weeks. Most recently, on Tuesday, they signed former Denver Broncos defensive back Jamar Johnson.

The Broncos selected Johnson in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played in three games over two seasons with Denver before beginning his spring football career with the Arlington Renegades in the XFL and the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL last year. Between the two leagues, he combined for 17 tackles in seven games.

Johnson found success in college with the Indiana Hoosiers from 2018-2020. He contributed 69 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, five pass deflections, seven interceptions and two forced fumbles in 31 games, and the Big Ten named him as a First-Team selection in 2020. He also won the team’s Corby Davis Memorial Award winner as the Hoosiers’ Most Outstanding Defensive Back.

The 24-year-old safety will have stiff competition in training camp with 17 defensive backs fighting for roster spots, but his experience in college on kickoff returns could provide an advantage for him.

Saskatchewan opens the season on the road against the Edmonton Elks on June 8.
